We all know how important it is to get that vitamin D (literally)! Now that summer is finally gracing us with its long-awaited presence and you are basking in the glorious sunshine, I bet that you are under the impression that there is no need to get vitamin D through other sources, right? Wrong! I was under the same impression as you, that is until I did some research only to be proven otherwise. So today I’m sharing with you guys some tips on sun safety.
Vitamin D 101
Vitamin D, also popularly coined as the “sunshine vitamin” is a pro-hormone naturally produced in our body when it is exposed to sunlight. Other than through sun exposure, it can also be obtained through certain food sources or by taking daily supplements. There are limited foods from which our body can produce sufficient vitamin D required daily.
Types – there are two major types of vitamin Ds: D2 and D3. The one our body naturally produces through sun exposure is D3 and can also be ingested from animal sources. These are more absorbable than D2 which are found in small amounts in mushrooms and is legally required to be added into cow’s milk and margarine.
Factors Impacting Absorption – the amount of melanin in one’s body affects the level of vitamin D produced in our body. People with darker skin colour have melanin-rich skin which although protects them from the harmful UVB rays, it also leads to lesser production of vitamin D in our body through sun exposure.
Now you may ask why is vitamin D so important? Well, peep below for all its benefits:
Many people are under the assumption that there is no longer a need to take daily vitamin C supplements during the summer because they are spending more time in the sun. But long hours spent under the sun also expose us to the harmful UVA and UVB rays which can cause skin cancer. This is why it is important to practise sun safety year-round by applying sunscreen and obtaining vitamin D from other sources including daily supplements.
I recently added Jamieson’s Vitamin D supplements to my daily routine so I can stay safe and healthy as I am constantly out in the sun, travelling and shooting. Since I have darker, melanin-rich skin, it makes it even harder for me to get the daily amount of vitamin D naturally even though I’m out in the sun and these supplements have really helped me in maintaining my health.
I love the fact that there are so many different Jamieson Vitamin D products to choose from. All Jamieson Vitamin D products promote the development of bones and teeth, help in the absorption of calcium and play a vital role in maintenance of good health; and they are all D3 which is the same type of vitamin D that our body naturally produces when exposed to the sun.
– Vitamin D3 Tablets – these support a healthy immune system and bone health, helps the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and helps maintain overall health.
– Vitamin D Gummies – these come in all-natural flavours including orange, strawberry and lemon and is my personal favourite! It tastes like candy and I need to stop myself from eating more.
– Vitamin D Spray – I love how travel-friendly and easy-to-use this spray is. This spray accompanies me on all my travels now and wherever I go.
– Vitamin D3 Droplets – these unflavoured liquid drops are made specifically for babies to support their development and immune system.
– Vitamin D3 Chewables – these chewable tablets are a great alternative if you don’t like to swallow pills.
– Vitamin D3 Premium Softgels – these are easy to swallow soft gels providing the same benefits.
What I love about Jamieson as a brand is its commitment to sun safety. It has partnered with the Canadian Cancer Society to promote safety under the sun by following some of these simple steps:
● Checking the UV index each day before heading out, and exercising extra
caution when it is 3 or higher
● Seeking shade and covering up with clothing in the sun
● Covering up with clothing, a hat and UV protected sunglasses
● Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 of higher
● Not using tanning beds
● Obtaining your vitamin D through food or supplements
Next time you are out and about having some fun in the sun, make sure you stay safe and healthy while making sure you get your daily dose of vitamin D through supplements!
